The Prom

Role Played

  • Emma Nolan

Experience

Playing Emma Nolan in the prom broke me out of my comfort zone and acting and forced me to Play a character that was very unlike myself. While I am feminine and bubbly, Emma is shy and a bit awkward, terrified of the spotlight that she is forced under. Emma is also a consistently kind and forgiving person, and she taught me to become forgiving and to accept everyone around me. Emma also showed me that I can play awkward or comedic characters, and grew my belting range.

Challenges conquered

  • Portraying Authenticity in Shyness and Awkwardness: Capturing Emma's shy and awkward essence while keeping the portrayal authentic and relatable was a significant challenge. This involved nuanced acting choices and constant fine-tuning based on directorial feedback and self-reflection.
  • Conveying a Powerful Message: "The Prom" carries important themes of acceptance, love, and fighting for one's rights. Portraying Emma in a way that did justice to these themes and touched the audience was a responsibility I took seriously.
  • Exploring Comedic Timing: Emma's character allowed me to delve into comedic acting, testing my timing and ability to convey humor through awkwardness without sacrificing the character's depth or making her a caricature.
